The short story mentions an unnamed narrator, always stalking an old man because he feels annoyed with the old man's eyes. The narrator also repeatedly said he was not crazy and also indirectly explained about the murder he committed to the old man. For approximately 7 nights the narrator stalks the old man to see his eyes, but the old man always fell asleep when the narrator comes stalking him. Until the eighth night, the narrator finally can see the old man's eyes.

At that time the narrator made a little noise because his hand slipped when he wanted to stalk the old man from the window which made the old man awake. The old man's eyes were seen by the narrator, hearing the old man's heartbeat beating very fast and hard, the narrator decided to attack the old grandfather by jumping with a loud scream and holding
the old man with his sleep.

The narrator emphasizes the careful calculation of the murder, and he hides the body by mutilating it, and hiding it under the floorboard. Even so, the effect of the man's shout caused the neighbor to call the police to ascertain what was happening at the old man's house. When the police arrived, the narrator assured that the scream was a narrator's cry for having a nightmare and the old man was not in the city at the time the police asked about the old man's whereabouts.

The narrator brings  chairs to the two policemen and they sat in the old man room, right in the place where the body is hidden without any suspicion. But, suddenly the narrator felt uncomfortable. He began to hear the sound of a heartbeat in his ear, the heartbeat grew louder and the narrator thought that the sound came from the heartbeat of the old man he killed. Frightened that the sound of the heartbeat was getting worse and felt that the police were pretending not to know, the narrator gave up and confessed his crime to the police for killing and mutilating the old man. The narrator opened the board floor where he hid the corpse of the old man.

Lack of the Story
Language that is difficult to understand by beginners who do not really understand literary language, guessing grooves so that sometimes it makes the distressed reader directly understand the essence of the story, and the depiction of an obscure character makes the reader feel confused.
