A Fun Way to Learn Reading

A Fun Way to Learn Reading

Not always, learning English (especially reading) is boring. Mr. Vilya proved it. On September 26, 2018, Mr. Vilya taught us in a class about narrative text. Before that day, Mr Vilya divided his students into some groups. Each group must make a poster describing the story determined by Mr. Vilya. Each group got a different story.

On September 26, 2018, each group must present the results of their poster to Mr. Vilya. Apparently, all the posters made by each group are very interesting. One of them belongs to group 6, which consists of Ulya, Arynaa, Izmi, and Ata.

Group 6 got a story titled "The Tell-Tale Heart". This story told of someone who killed an old man, because the perpetrator was upset with the old man's eyes. The perpetrator then hid the old man's body under the floor board. At the end of the story, the perpetrator confessed his crime to the police.

Group 6 made their posters with the following steps:
1. Determine the shape of the poster
2. Looking for references on the internet
3. Voting references that will be used
4. Combining agreed references
5. Make a rough sketch on the poster
6. Thickened poster sketch (tool: drawing pen and marker)
7. Coloring (tools: crayon, colored pencils, and watercolors)

Mr Vilya gave a number of questions to group 6. Among them:
1. What is the title of the story?
Answer: The Tell-Tale Heart.
2. Who is the author?
Answer: Edgar Allan
3. Who designed and colored the picture?
Answer: Arynaa
4. Can you tell me the conflict?
Answer: when the offender felt annoyed with the eyes of an old man
5. Where was the setting?
Answer: in the old man’s room
6. How long do you need to finish reading this story?
Answer: an hour
7. Do you find any moral value?
Answer: “Nervousness can’t be hiding. All bad things you did will be exposed.”
8. What coloring did you use?
Answer: crayon, colored pencils, and watercolors

With this method, students can express their ideas and creativity. The students also will not feel bored when they study English (especially reading). It is expected that students can understand what they are reading.
