Based
on new study, children growing up single parent families are twice as likely as
their counter parts to develop serious psychiatric illness and addiction later
in life. The Lancet medical jurnal published a study about debated whether children
from broken homes, than kids whose
parents stay together to develop serious emotional problems. It’s important
because, its unprecented scale and follow up- and it tracked about 1 million
children for a decade, into their mid-20 s.
This study suggest, that finance
hardship may play a role, but other experts the research said that quality of
parenting could be a factor. According the Swedish National Registries,
children lived in a single parents house hold if they were living with the same
single adult in the both 1985 and 1990 housing census. It’s could have been the
result of divorce, separation, death of a parents, out of wedlock birth, or other
reason.
The childrens with single parents were
twice as likely as the other to develop a psychiatric illness such as
depression or schizophrenia, to kill themselves or attempt suicide, and consume
the acohol and drug. The girls lived with a single parent were there times more
likely to become drug addicts and the boys were four times more likely.
The research concluded that financial
hardship and quality of parenting could be a factor. We must think if the
income that make a difference. The income of Swedish mother would do a lot
better than the British or UK. So, the money is an indicator of something else,”said
Mc. Sara Lanahan (a professor of sociologi and public affair at Princeton
University).
Dr. Stephen Scott said “in the last 20 to
30 years, provery has been greatly reduced but psychiatric problems in children
have not in Europe. The single parents might not have done well by their kids,
even if they hadn’t ended up alone, and it is also harder to be a warm, non
critical parent when you are bringing up a child alone. But, the children from
single parent families who don’t end up with serious emotional problems. There may
also be a genetic element. So, they are more easy angry and affended.
